When you mention raw foods in conversation it’s so often instantly met with resistance or confusion. You’re either met with condescending remarks from people who actually have no knowledge of rawfoodism whatsoever, or you’ll be met with questions such as “How can a raw food diet possibly be healthy or natural for humans?”, which is a valid question and one that I’ll be attempting to answer fairly in this blog.
“We here at Raw Cafe are not actually advocating that you must suddenly become raw vegan overnight or never touch animal products again!”
Lot’s of people are instantly put off the idea of eating raw food simply because they “can’t live without their meat or dairy” or they think raw foods are bland or boring (the latter being especially untrue), but I’m here to state categorically that Raw Foods can and are being used well as part of a normal diet including animal products, and we here at Raw Cafe are not actually advocating that you must suddenly become raw vegan overnight or never touch animal products again! You can enjoy both raw vegan foods and cooked animals products as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle, and here’s why.
First of all, let’s look at why are Raw Foods good? Why is raw a healthy choice? What are the benefits of eating raw plant based foods? Are there any? Well, undoubtedly, the answer is yes.
Eating raw foods decalcifies and defluoridates our pineal glands. The pineal gland is a pine-cone shaped gland in our brains which produces melatonin and helps regulate our sleeping patterns, among other things. Fluoride (sodium fluoride) is extremely dangerous to the pineal gland as it hardens its interior walls therefore disrupting the gland’s natural functions, but Fluoride can still be regularly found in drinking water, toothpaste and many other consumer products. For good sleep and general wellbeing it’s important to keep the pineal gland free of fluoridation and eating uncooked, un-denatured raw foods is a very good way of doing this.
“Heat destroys enzymes, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats and makes the food more difficult to digest”
Raw foods also are very detoxifying to our bodies in general and they help cleanse our digestive tract and eliminate toxins from our system. One of the most important benefits of eating uncooked foods though is how they still retain their full nutritional potential
when consumed. When you cook food at temperatures above 43 degrees celsius, a huge percentage of the available nutrients are destroyed and its chemical make-up altered; in essence stripping the food of the very nutrients that your body is requesting when it signals hunger. Heat destroys enzymes, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats and makes the food more difficult to digest. Ever had that feeling after you ate a big cooked meal that you either didn’t feel full or needed something more? Well, if you were eating nutrient stripped food then it didn’t satisfy the body’s hunger meaning you still wanted more even after you’d finished. With information like this it’s quite easy to see why more than one third of US and UK adults are obese.
Since the late 1800‘s people have been curing various illnesses and diseases with raw foods, and a Raw diet remains one of the most transformative tools that exists for humans today in terms of transforming your mental state and bodily functions, but… (Yes, there is a but, I told you this blog would be fair!) just because we’re here selling incredible raw food dishes at Atsumi Raw Cafe doesn’t mean we’re saying you need to completely cut out any animal products or cooked foods at once and go fully raw! We advise that you eat as much raw food as you can/wish to and make it part of your normal diet. Of course many people are indeed on a 100% fully raw diet which is fantastic for them and something that I personally aim to try to see if it will work for me, but there are doubts over whether or not a diet based completely on raw vegan products is natural or even healthy for humans in the long term.
” just because we’re here selling incredible raw food dishes at Atsumi Raw Cafe doesn’t mean we’re saying you need to go fully raw”
Daniel Vitalis, one of the world’s leading health and nutrition experts and who was a Raw Vegan for 10 years, believes that a fully Raw Diet is still just a newfound experiment which is not natural for homo sapiens. He believes that a lack a cholesterol in a vegan’s diet is a fundamental reason as to why it’s essential for humans to consume at least some animal products. “One [important] thing which is in animal fat and probably one of the most important is cholesterol. There is a huge myth about it and how people think they need to avoid it, but cholesterol is one of the most important substances for us. We use cholesterol to make all of our gonadal hormones! Testosterone, estrogen and progesterone are all made from it… A lot of times vegans will say ‘Well your body makes it’s own cholesterol’. Your body makes it’s own because if you don’t have it you’ll die… your body produces it so that in times of famine you don’t die, but it doesn’t have the ability to make as much as you need to fully thrive”. He continues “[Hence why] some vegans do have cholesterol deficiencies over time”.
When you take a look back at some of the very earliest humans; Cro-Magnon and the earlier Homo Habilis, it is accepted in the whole Scientific community that these creatures were hunting large red meat animals and cooking them prior to consumption. It is also believed that it was the eating of meat by Homo Habilis that helped accelerate the growth and development of the human brain to become what it is today. Therefore to suggest that either a raw vegetarian or raw vegan diet is natural to our species is perhaps somewhat misleading, as we have been eating meat since the beginning of our journey as a species!
“to suggest that either a raw vegetarian or raw vegan diet is natural to our species is perhaps somewhat misleading”
So, why is a Raw Food Restaurant telling you this information? Surely that weakens our product? No, not at all. We believe in being fair, honest, true and having an open mind to the information which is out there. It’s evident that Raw Foods are cleansing, great for digestion and day-to-day health and well-being (as well as tasting simply incredible!) but there is also evidence to suggest that we cannot properly thrive without the inclusion of certain animal products into our diets, and that our species have been doing so for hundreds of thousands of years previously. So we’re not going to make bold unfounded claims about how if you don’t eat raw food at Raw Cafe at least three times a day you’re doomed to early death and disease! With that in mind however, there is also a lot of information to suggest that the Standard American Diet – consisting of mainly cooked animal products or processed foods – has contributed massively to the shocking increase in human degenerative diseases, so we believe that a diet consisting of about 50% raw and 50% cooked/animal based products may well be a good way to go. And of course those percentages are flexible.
In summary, try to eat as much Raw Food as you possibly can to help cleanse, detoxify and feel great, but do some serious research and consideration before taking the plunge to going 100% fully raw.
